The air filter plays a key role in the efficiency of your central cooling system. It protects the air handler from dirt and dust, which is particularly important when your HVAC system is working hard to keep your home comfortably cool. A clogged air filter restricts airflow and places a greater strain on the air handler fan motor. This forces the entire system to work harder to cool your home. The end result is poor indoor air quality, higher energy bills and the potential for premature equipment failure. Check and/or replace your air filters every month or two to keep your cooling equipment running at its best. Your personal use will determine how frequently your air filters will have to be changed, but replacing them only once a year won’t do. When you’re purchasing an air filter, consider the MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Higher-efficiency filters capture more airborne particulates — a great option for allergy sufferers.  With all the beauty the changing seasons bring, along with it comes a fair amount of misery for allergy sufferers. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to tame the watery eyes, sneezing, and general malaise. • If you like the cool breeze of open windows, wait till after the morning hours to open them. Many trees release their pollen when daylight hits, so holding off a few hours will help. • Change your clothes when you walk back in the house from yard work. You’ll be bringing in the outdoors with you, and it’s best to put those in the washer immediately. Leaving your shoes at the door can help too. • Vacuum often, and use a high-quality vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. They really do make a difference. • You knew we’d say it...change those filters! Your AC system works best at collecting undesirable particles in the air when it has a clean and fresh filter. • Consider installing an air purification system. An iWave, for example, will help battle that pesky pollen, dander, and dust in your home (and does it all maintenance free). Call us today to learn more.
